Basma and Don are the creators of ‘Walls of Freedom’. Each one brings a unique expertise to the book. While Don is an expert on graffiti, has long time experience in publishing and produces urban art projects in the Middle East, Basma is an academic with extensive knowledge on Arab art & design including political contemporary art & Arabic type design.

Basma Hamdy

Artist, Designer, Educator

Basma Hamdy is an artist and designer whose practice and research challenge established social and political norms creating work that has transformative power within communities, societies and nations. Since 2011, Basma has been dedicated to researching and documenting the streetart of the Egyptian Revolution. Basma has been featured in several festivals and events worldwide and a wide range of international media. She has extensive experience teaching art and design in the Middle East.

Don Karl AKA Stone

Cultural Activist, Graffiti Writer, Publisher

Don Karl aka Stone is a cultural activist, graffiti writer, author, and publisher. He started painting graffiti in 1983 and published his first book on train writing in 1986. Many books and articles have followed. He co-wrote the book Arabic Graffiti and has curated numerous international urban art projects such as Cubabrasil and White Wall Beirut. Since 2011 he has worked closely with Egyptian street artists on events and exhibitions. He currently runs the publishing house From Here To Fame in Berlin.
